Roche Brune
Developed in the mid-1980s, this site enjoyed its heyday during that period. For a few years, it was nothing less than the “Verdon of Grenoble.” The abseil-only access and the long day spent hanging on the ledge did not deter the old-timers, who were well-versed in mountaineering and multi-pitch routes. This was followed by a period when the site was frequented by little more than a few enthusiasts, who even added a few pitches on the lower ledges. So even though the rock was still as beautiful as ever, the equipment had aged. It was to breathe new life into this remarkable site and allow climbers to safely experience that unique “high” 800 meters above the Voreppe valley that, in 2013, all the equipment was overhauled by the route-setters from the Voiron-based EVA club. The access routes to the rappels and the landing ledge at the bottom of these rappels have been wired, and the “emergency exits” have been improved. Nevertheless, this site is not suitable for beginners, and the term “adventure climbing” remains entirely appropriate for Roche Brune.
